Giltwood Console Table with Marble Top – Neoclassical Elegance, Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautifully decorative giltwood console table dating to circa 1900. The profile of this console is slim and shaped in a graceful demi‑lune form and topped with an original marble slab of soft, natural veining. The apron is richly carved with scrolling motifs and classical ornament, all highlighted in a warm gold finish that has mellowed attractively with age.

Standing on six slender, fluted legs with acanthus‑carved capitals and turned details, the piece has wonderful balance and presence—light on its feet yet undeniably opulent. The combination of crisp carving, refined proportions, and the cool marble surface makes it an ideal statement for a hallway, drawing room, or design‑led interior.

A striking example of late‑19th to early‑20th‑century neoclassical revival craftsmanship, full of charm and decorative impact.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical console tables, popularised in the late 18th century and reproduced in the 19th and early 20th centuries, feature symmetrical proportions, geometric mouldings, classical motifs such as acanthus leaves and guilloche friezes, and straight tapered or turned legs inspired by ancient Greek and Roman architecture.

These tables were typically crafted from carved timber frames coated with layers of gesso and finished with thin gold leaf. The tabletops were overlaid with shaped slabs of natural marble, providing a durable surface suited to displaying decorative objects.

Authentic period examples display hand-carved timber joinery, faint signs of wear or oxidisation on the gilded leafing, and natural surface variation on the reverse of the marble top rather than uniform factory-machined finishes.

Position the console table against a neutral accent wall in a hallway or drawing room, pairing it with a large modern framed painting or minimalist mirror above to balance the detailed carving of the gilded frame.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding moisture or harsh liquid polishes. Clean the marble top separately using a soft cloth dampened with pH-neutral stone cleaner to prevent staining or etching.
