Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI Revival furniture emerged in the mid-to-late 19th century, drawing inspiration from classical antiquity. Characteristics include straight or gently curved neoclassical proportions, fluted legs, architectural mouldings, and motifs such as Vitruvian scrolls, Guilloche carving, and leaf ornamentation.

These tables are constructed using timber framesoften lime wood, pine, or beechcoated in gesso and finished with gold leaf gilding. Tops are typically fitted with thick slabs of natural marble, such as dark green Campan or Verde Antico marble, shaped to follow the semi-circular frame.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-carving, original joint construction on the undersides, and natural distress or oxidisation to the gilding where the white gesso or red bole base coat shows through. Marble tops should display minor hand-cut tooling marks on the raw underside.

A pair of demilune tables can be placed symmetrically flanking a doorways, fireplace alcove, or grand hallway corridor. Positioning contemporary artwork or large mirrors above the tables creates a balanced contrast between historic architecture and modern design.

Dust giltwood surfaces gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical polish which can dissolve traditional gesso and gold leaf. Clean marble tops using a damp, non-abrasive cloth and pH-neutral cleaner, immediately wiping away moisture to prevent stone etching.
