Description

Oil on canvas by WILLIAM EDDOWES TURNER (C.1820-1885) of bay hunter in a stable with a dog at its feet, signed lower left. The oil on canvas is signed by the artist and mounted in a good wooden frame with gilt slip.

William Eddowes Turner (c.1820–1885) was a 19th-century British painter. Largely self-taught and based in Nottingham, he was highly regarded for his traditional pastoral landscapes and specialized animal portraits, particularly horses, dogs, and livestock. He is best known for depicting horses, champions of specific dog breeds (such as fox terriers), and individual pets with their owners. His rural scenes typically feature cattle and sheep grazing in tranquil, expansive pastures, as well as highland drove scenes.

Turner exhibited his works locally, at the British Institution and at the Society of British Artists between 1858 and 1862.

Dimensions - 53cm x 71cm and including frame 91 x 73 cm
