Fine Mid-19th Century French Louis Xv Style Burr Walnut Fold Over Card / Games Table

19th century
Description

A fine and highly decorative mid-19th century French Louis XV style fold-over card or games table, dating to circa 1850, of elegant serpentine form and beautifully veneered in richly figured burr walnut.

The shaped fold-over top opens to reveal a baize-lined playing surface, making the piece both practical and visually striking. The serpentine frieze is raised on graceful cabriole legs, embellished with ornate gilt metal mounts and sabots in the Rococo taste, enhancing its distinctly French decorative appeal.

The burr walnut veneers display particularly attractive figuring and warm colour throughout, with the shaped outline and flowing proportions giving the table exceptional elegance from every angle. When closed, it serves beautifully as a sophisticated occasional or centre table; when opened, it becomes a practical and charming games table.

A stylish and versatile antique, ideal for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Presented in good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with period use.

Circa 1850

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XV style furniture, emerging in 18th-century France, is defined by Rococo influences featuring curved silhouettes, asymmetrical ornamentation, cabriole legs, and delicate brass or bronze mounts.

These tables typically featured a solid timber core veneered with decorative burr walnut or rosewood, combined with cast ormolu mounts and a swivelling or hinged fold-over top revealing an interior playing surface.

Authentic period and revival pieces display hand-carved joinery, hand-cast gilt-bronze mounts with natural patination, matched veneer symmetry, and traditional wooden hinge mechanisms.

Positioned against a wall when closed, the table functions as a console or side table for displaying decorative objects, while easily opening for practical use during entertainment.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, position the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and dust gilt mounts using a soft dry cloth.
