Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian gilt overmantel mirror is a large mirror crafted during the 19th century, specifically proportioned to rest on or hang above a fireplace mantelpiece. These frames are typically constructed from wood and gesso finished with gold leaf, featuring arched upper frames and carved decorative supports.

During the 19th century, mirror frames were built using a carved wooden core covered with layers of gesso (a mixture of chalk and glue). Artisans then carved ornate decorative details into the gesso before applying thin sheets of gold leaf over a clay base, followed by hand-burnishing.

Authentic antique giltwood mirrors typically show signs of natural age, including slight distressing to the gold leaf revealing the red or grey bole beneath, soft oxidation on the original mirror glass, and hand-cut wooden backing boards.

An arched gilt mirror can be placed above a fireplace mantel, sat atop a modern sideboard, or positioned as a focal point in a hallway. The warmth of the gilded finish contrasts well with modern neutral walls, adding height and light to the room.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently with a soft feather duster or dry watercolour brush. Avoid using liquid cleaners, solvents, or damp cloths, as water can dissolve the water-gilded gesso layer underneath the leaf.
