Antique French Bell Strike Repeating Carriage Clock Doucine Case Serial 2016

19th century
Description

This is a mid-to-late 19th-century French carriage clock featuring a gilded brass Doucine case with serpentine-shaped ogee moldings. The case includes a matching curved handle and five beveled glass panels, with a rectangular viewing aperture on the top plate. The white enamel dial is marked with black Roman numerals and blued steel Breguet-style hands.

The rear hinged door reveals a mechanical 8-day movement with a bell-striking mechanism. The movement sounds the hours and half-hours on an internal polished bell and includes a push-repeat function activated by a button on the top of the case. The base of the clock features six circular sound vents to enhance the clarity of the bell strike. Both the backplate and base plate are stamped with the matching serial number 2016. The base also displays faint hand-engraved horological service marks.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in France in the early 19th century, carriage clocks were portable timepieces designed for travel, featuring a rectangular case with glass panels and a top carrying handle.

Standard construction involves heavy brass cases with bevelled glass aperture panels, a white enamel dial with Roman numerals, and a mechanical spring-driven movement.

Authentic examples feature a push-button repeat mechanism on top of the case, solid brass construction, mechanical balance escapements visible through glass panels, and serial numbers stamped on the back plate.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, within a bookcase display, or on an executive desk alongside leather accessories and brass accents.

Keep the case free from dust using a soft dry cloth, avoid harsh chemical cleaners on original metal finishes, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every five to seven years.
