Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in early nineteenth-century France, carriage clocks were designed as portable travel timepieces. The term gorge case refers to a specific moulded brass case design featuring subtle concave channel mouldings along the top, base, and vertical pillars.

Traditional carriage clocks are constructed with solid brass cases, often polished or gilded, alongside clear bevelled glass viewing panels. The dial is typically made of white enamel fired onto copper, featuring painted numerals and steel hands.

Authentic pieces feature heavy cast brass construction, bevelled glass panels rather than acrylic, and a visible mechanical platform escapement through the top glass window. Maker marks, serial numbers, or French horological trade stamps are often present on the rear movement plate.

Carriage clocks are commonly placed on mantelpieces, writing desks, or styled within bookshelves to serve as functional decorative accents. Their compact size allows them to be layered alongside books, framed artwork, and contemporary ceramics.

Maintain the casing by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that can remove historic finishes. Wind the mechanical movement using the correct size key without over-tensioning the mainspring, and arrange professional horological servicing every few years.
