Pair of Japanese Meiji Satsuma Vases by Kinkōzan, Kyoto, C.1890–1910

A rare and highly attractive pair of Japanese Satsuma vases by Kinkōzan, Kyoto, dating to the late Meiji period, circa 1890–1910. Each vase is signed to the base with the gilt mark Dai Nippon / Kinkōzan, one of the most important and desirable names in the entire Satsuma market.

Kinkōzan stands alongside the very finest makers associated with Meiji-period Kyoto Satsuma. The workshop was celebrated for refined cream crackled glaze, exceptionally detailed enamel painting, rich but controlled gilding and sophisticated compositions made for the highest level of the international market. Signed Kinkōzan pieces are especially sought after because the name represents one of the strongest guarantees of quality, prestige and collectability within Japanese Satsuma ceramics.

This pair is decorated with a beautifully composed autumnal scene of birds among maple branches. The design is not confined to simple panels but flows around the rounded bodies of the vases, giving the pair strong movement and excellent decorative balance. The birds are very finely painted in soft blue-green enamel, with exceptionally delicate gilt linework defining the plumage. The maple leaves are rendered in red, brown, black and gold, producing a rich seasonal contrast against the warm cream crackled ground.

The necks are finished with dense gilt ornamental borders, adding refinement and completing the architectural balance of the form. The quality of the painting, the confidence of the composition and the signed Kinkōzan mark place this pair clearly above ordinary export Satsuma.

Condition:

Condition is excellent. The first vase has only minor rubbing to the gilding on the rim and slight dirt within the natural crackle, which could be carefully cleaned. The second vase is excellent, with no visible loss of gilding. Both vases have been examined under ultraviolet light and show no cracks, no restoration and no structural damage. The pair is presented on its fitted wooden stands.
