Description

Late 19th-Century Mahogany Table-Top Dressing Mirror, c.1880–1900

A well-proportioned late 19th-century mahogany table-top dressing mirror, dating from the closing decades of the Victorian period. Of pleasingly balanced form, the rectangular mirror plate is housed within a reeded mahogany frame, flanked by shaped side supports that allow the mirror to tilt, resting on a stepped rectangular base raised on bun feet.

The uprights and frame are crisply worked with fine reeding and restrained turning, reflecting the practical yet decorative character of late Victorian dressing furniture. The mirror retains its original bevelled-edge plate, adding refinement to the overall appearance, while the warm mahogany surface displays an attractive, even colour throughout.

Compact yet substantial, this is a useful and decorative dressing mirror, well suited to a chest of drawers, dressing table or sideboard.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian table top dressing mirror, historically termed a toilet mirror, is a portable mirror designed to sit atop a dressing table, chest of drawers, or vanity unit. Popularised in the 19th century, these mirrors featured adjustable tilting frames supported by side uprights mounted on a sturdy timber base.

These mirrors were primarily constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring veneered bases and fluted or turned posts. The mirror plates were typically hand-cut bevelled glass secured with brass friction pivots and internal wood-backed panels.

Authentic late Victorian mirrors feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the base frame, heavy mercury or early silvered glass with natural foxing, and original brass swivel hardware. Timber backs secured with small period fasteners further indicate historical construction.

Position the mirror on a contemporary sideboard, bedroom chest, or wide window sill to add depth and natural light reflection. Pairing rich mahogany tones with neutral walls or minimalist decor creates a balanced contrast between period craftsmanship and modern aesthetics.

Clean the mahogany frame using a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to preserve the timber finish. Avoid harsh chemical sprays on the mirror glass, applying glass cleaner directly to a cloth first to prevent liquid from seeping into the wooden rebate.
