Antique George III 1790 Mahogany & Brass Chest of 5 Drawers by J Moorcroft

18th century
Description

Here we have a small proportioned George III, circa 1790, about 230 year old Mahogany & Brass Handled Chest of 5 Drawers with ogee feet by cabinet maker J Moorcroft. With all original brass handles, key inscriptions and locks. This piece has a beautiful patina only achieved from years of age to the wood and this is why we have carefully chosen to leave the brass handles with the aged look and not cleaned up as it is now a real character piece.

J Moorcroft was a cabinet maker from Ormskirk Lancashire who operated between 1787-98.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III furniture, dating from 1760 to 1820, is recognised for its classical proportions, symmetry, and extensive use of high-quality mahogany. Design influences from Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton dominated this period, featuring neat bracket feet, cockbeaded drawers, and refined brass hardware.

Primary timbers included solid and veneered mahogany or walnut, while secondary woods such as pine or oak were used for internal drawer linings. Handles and keyhole escutcheons were typically cast in brass, often with swan-neck or bail handle designs.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, uneven oak or pine back panels, and natural wear or shrinkage marks consistent with age. Look for original brass swan-neck handles and evidence of hand-planed timber surfaces on the underside and back.

A Georgian chest of drawers functions well as a focal piece in an entryway, bedroom, or living area. Anchor the item by pairing it with modern abstract artwork mounted above and neutral minimalist ceramics placed on the top surface to contrast traditional wood tones with contemporary textures.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying and fading. Dust regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing along the direction of the grain.
