Description:

A fine quality antique English large Art Deco armoire, with three serpentine-shaped doors, in burr walnut, comprising a stunning fitted interior, circa 1930, in excellent original condition. This burr walnut Art Deco wardrobe features a decorative frontage, with serpentine shaped doors, comprising mirror-matched burr walnut timbers.

The Art Deco wardrobe comprises two main sections. On the left-hand side is a 2-door section which opens to reveal a large mahogany lined interior, fitted with two hanging rails of different heights, with an open shelf in the top-right corner. The interior retains the original metal hanging bars and original sliding brass hooks. The metal horizontal pole, which is set lower down in this section, is to prevent long clothing from spilling out of the wardrobe, so that the doors can be closed unimpeded. The third right-door opens to reveal another mahogany lined interior, comprises four fixed shelves, interspersed with three bevel glass fronts, which are hinged and retain the brass pull handles, which open to reveal further storage boxes. The three glass doors retain the original labels… “Sundries”, “Lingerie” and “Underwear”. Adjacent to the upper shelf of the Art Deco wardrobe, there is located the original manufacturers’ label, which reads “Guaranteed Handmade by British Craftsmen”.

The large Art Deco armoire, comprises a stunning serpentine design, with a French polished frame. The two wardrobe doors display stunning mirror-matched burr walnut timbers and retain their original solid brass shaped handles, with the original push-lever door lock, with the original key. The left-hand door retains its original sliding bolt at the top and bottom, to secure the door when closed. The right-hand door retains its original working lever lock and key.

The large Art Deco armoire, retains its original cornice and recessed plinth, which are both detachable and it retains its original backboards. The Art Deco closet dismantles into four sections in total, with two main sections for the wardrobe itself.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco wardrobes from the 1930s in England featured streamlined forms, rounded edges, and prominent geometric or bookmatched figure veneers, departing from Victorian ornamentation in favour of modern symmetry and functionality.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised figured timber veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, and maple over solid hardwood cores, often paired with brass, bakelite, or chrome hardware.

Authentic pieces display genuine bookmatched wood grain patterns, hand-fitted doors, period-correct brass or metal handles, and interior fitting details like original hanging rails or stamped maker labels.

Position the piece as a central focal point against a neutral backdrop, balancing its rich timber tones with modern minimalist lighting, soft textured textiles, and understated architectural elements.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly along the direction of the grain, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
