A 20th Century Carved Wood Mirror

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Hobo Design
Description

An unusual carved wood mirror dating from the early part of the 20th century. A deeply carved frame with great sculptural shape. Floral motifs and a repetitive circular pattern to the base.

Hobo loves because: absolutely love the shape to it, the scrolling edge and of course the flowers. It was one of those pieces that I've never seen anything comparable to, but was instantly drawn to it.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baroque revival mirrors feature exaggerated curves, intricate scrollwork, floral rosettes, and deeply carved wood mouldings inspired by 17th-century European design traditions.

These mirrors were typically crafted from hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or beech, often featuring hand-carved details, dark stained finishes, and silvered glass.

Look for signs of hand-tool marks on the carved details, age-appropriate tarnishing or desilvering on the mirror glass, and traditional backboard construction with aged fasteners.

Position the mirror above a console table or hallway bench to serve as a focal point, pairing dark wood tones with neutral walls or textured plaster.

Dust the timber carving regularly with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to nourish the wood, and clean the glass with a lint-free cloth without saturating the frame.
