Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A heraldic shield mirror is a decorative wall-mounted looking glass featuring a frame shaped in the style of an armorial crest or cartouche. Popularised during nineteenth-century historical revival movements, these frames typically feature carved volutes, scrollwork, and dense hardwood construction.

Artisans constructed these frames using dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, which provided structural stability for detailed carving. The reflective plates comprised silvered mirror glass, which gradually develops characteristic foxing over time.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved tool marks with subtle variations, period joinery on the reverse, and genuine oxidisation within the recessed carvings. The mirror plate typically shows dark spotting, desilvered edges, or minor glass distortions resulting from historic manufacturing techniques.

Place the mirror as a focal point in an entry hallway, above a side cabinet, or arranged within an eclectic gallery wall. Pairing dark carved timber with neutral wall tones provides visual contrast while highlighting the architectural outline of the frame.

Dust the timber frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, using a soft brush to clear dust from deeper carvings. Apply a small amount of neutral beeswax polish annually to protect the walnut finish, and clean the glass plate with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water.
