Virginia Walnut Kneehole Desk

18th century
For Sale by Hansord Antiques
Description

An early 18th century walnut kneehole desk with good original handles, and quarter veneered top.

The rich colour of the veneers on this kneehole would make us think it is Virginian walnut rather than the European normally used in English desks.

A similar coloured piece is illustrated in the Norman Adam’s book on 18th century furniture.

Declaration

Hansord Antiques has dated this Antique Walnut Kneehole Desk to the 18th Century.

Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the early 18th century during the Queen Anne and Georgian periods, a kneehole desk features a recessed central compartment flanked by pedestals of drawers, allowing a seated person to work comfortably at the flat writing surface.

These pieces were typically constructed using native woods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, featuring brass backplate drop handles, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and solid wood dust boards between drawers.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct brass hardware, authentic timber oxidisation inside drawer linings, and a recessed central cupboard door with shaped apron detailing.

A walnut kneehole desk functions well as a compact writing desk in a home office, an entry hallway console table, or a vanity table in a bedroom when paired with neutral walls and subtle brass lighting.

Maintain the timber figure by applying a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly, keeping the surface clear of standing moisture, and placing the piece away from direct sunlight or strong heat sources to prevent wood movement.
