Antique Elgin Pocket Watch, 1923

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Elgin pocket watch, 1923.

The watch has a 17-jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and it has the serial number 25,405,485 which dates it back to 1923. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 44mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop so smaller than a standard 50mm pocket watch. The case is gold filled and it is in good condition. The back of the watch has the owner’s initials HC, probably the original owner going by the Art Deco style font.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The signed dial is in its original finish with original hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Founded in 1864 in Illinois, the Elgin National Watch Company became one of Americas largest manufacturers of mass-produced mechanical timepieces. During the early twentieth century, Elgin produced millions of reliable open-face and hunter-case pocket watches favoured for their precision engineering.

Pocket watches from the 1920s typically featured cases made from gold-filled metal, rolled gold plate, or solid gold, alongside engine-turned metal dials. Mechanical movements incorporated jewelled bearings, steel springs, and brass gear trains housed beneath a glass crystal.

Authenticity can be verified by opening the case back to inspect the movement serial number, which matches Elgin manufacturing registers. Original models display stamped movement markings, genuine jewelled pivots, and period-correct typography on the dial face.

An antique pocket watch can be worn traditionally in a waistcoat pocket attached to an Albert chain or carried in a jacket pocket. Collectors also display timepieces on dedicated desktop pocket watch stands or within protective glass domes.

Mechanical pocket watches require regular servicing by a professional horologist every three to five years to clean and lubricate internal gears. Store the watch in a dry, temperature-controlled environment away from magnetic fields and moisture.
