George Kilburne: A Splendid Watercolour

1900 - 1920
Description

GEORGE KILBURNE: a very fine quality and beautifully executed WATERCOLOUR of a “Georgian period” interior scene so typical of this highly regarded artist. The scene is a private ball full of elegantly dressed guests, held in a fine Georgian house, with a young lady seated on a Chippendale settee. She has been approached by an equally well-dressed gentleman, perhaps being asked for a dance? We shall never know the outcome… Beautifully painted with great attention to detail, and a fine watercolour. 56 x 49cms including the good ornate gilded frame. Signed lower right corner; circa 1880-1910.

* GEORGE GOODWIN KILBURNE was a prominent artist and illustrator renowned for his detailed accurate depiction of upperclass Georgian and Victorian life. Working primarily in watercolours and occasionally in oils he exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy for over 50 years.

** This charming watercolour is not on view in the shop; for further details please call 07860 818212, or e-mail: kerry@quietstreetantiques.co.uk

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian genre watercolour paintings depict everyday life or historical costume scenes, rendered in water-based pigments on paper. Popular throughout the nineteenth century, these works frequently illustrated social interactions and detailed interior settings.

These artworks were executed using natural pigment watercolours on rag paper, mounted behind glass to prevent environmental damage. Frames were constructed from carved timber coated with composition gesso and finished with hand-applied gold leaf.

Authentic pieces feature fine brushwork, artist signatures, natural age-related toning or foxing on paper, and era-appropriate backing materials. Period-correct gesso and gilt wood frames with natural surface oxidisation also indicate authenticity.

Position the picture above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a gallery wall arrangement to create a visual focal point. Displaying historical art alongside contemporary furniture provides balanced contrast in traditional and eclectic interiors.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to prevent fading and paper degradation. Ensure the frame uses acid-free mounting materials and protective glass during conservation.
