Pair of Copper Coal Scuttles C.1880

Description

Pair of splendid 19th.c. copper coal scuttles c.1880. Ideal for coal, logs and kindling (they even work well as magazine tidies). Scoop shaped scuttles with hinged hoop handles at the top and a nicely shaped grip in brass at the rear, both stamped with the number 16. Raised on conical bases. Old soldered repair at the inside rear on one scuttle. Otherwise excellent original condition.

A coal scuttle, also known as a coal hod, is a container designed to hold a supply of coal near a domestic fireplace. Popularised during the 19th century, these vessels featured practical shapes such as the helmet design to facilitate pouring fuel directly into grates.

Late Victorian coal scuttles were typically crafted from sheet copper or brass, featuring riveted seams, rolled rims, and cast metal handles for durability near heat. The interiors often showed hand-hammered joinery and occasional tinned linings to resist oxidisation.
