Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The helmet-shaped coal scuttle gained widespread popularity during the George III period in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Designed with a wide scooped mouth mimicking an inverted military helmet, the form allowed for easy scooping and pouring of coal into open hearth fireplaces.

Authentic Georgian scuttles were fabricated primarily from heavy-gauge copper or brass sheet metal. The components were shaped by hand and assembled using copper or brass rivets, brazed seams, and cast brass mountings for handle attachments.

Authentic period examples feature hand-driven rivets, visible dovetailed or brazed seam lines, and hand-hammered irregularities in the copper sheet. Later reproductions often display machine-pressed metalwork, uniform modern screws, and thinner lightweight copper.

In modern interiors, a copper coal scuttle serves as a functional fireside vessel for holding dried kindling, logs, or matches alongside a wood-burning stove. Alternatively, it can be repurposed near a hearth or entryway as a planter or decorative accent to introduce warm metallic tones.

To preserve the metal, dust regularly with a soft cloth. Apply microcrystalline wax to protect the surface from oxidisation, and avoid harsh abrasive chemicals that strip natural patina or cause discolouration near riveted joins.
