Antique Mahogany Cabinet / Chest on Legs

1900 - 1920
Description

A fantastic antique mahogany cabinet / chest on legs. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1900-1910 period.

It has a stylish and elegant design, the quality is outstanding. This looks like a regular chest on chest, but three of the upper drawers are actually dummy drawers that open as a door to reveal a cabinet space. There is a pull out slide below the cabinet, so this would be great as a drinks cabinet, or as a bedroom storage piece. The cornice has lovely teardrop moulding, this stands on cabriole legs with shell carving at the knees. The top half lifts off the bottom half for ease of transport.

We have had this re-polished to a high standard, the condition is excellent for its age.

A chest on stand, often referred to as a tallboy or highboy, is a two-section piece of furniture consisting of a chest of drawers mounted atop a raised base or leg frame. Originating in the late seventeenth century, this design provided elevated storage while protecting contents from floor dampness.

Traditional mahogany chests feature solid timber frames faced with flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer lining, and cast brass drop handles. The lower stands were constructed using mortise and tenon joinery to support the weight of the upper cabinet.
