Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval fire screen is a freestanding frame supported on twin feet, developed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to protect occupants faces and clothing from intense hearth heat. In Victorian homes, these functional screens doubled as decorative display frames for elaborate hand-stitched needlework and tapestry art.

Victorian examples were typically crafted from fine hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, selected for their grain and durability. The central panels were commonly composed of hand-worked wool needlepoint, silk embroidery, or tapestry mounted on canvas.

Authentic period screens display traditional joinery techniques, such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, along with natural wood aging and patination. The needlework backing will often show period canvas construction and irregular hand-stitching rather than uniform machine production.

A period fire screen can be positioned beside an inactive or functional fireplace to add texture and historical detail to a hearth area. It also serves as a freestanding decorative textile frame in empty corners, hallways, or alcoves.

Keep the screen placed away from direct sunlight and modern high-heat hearths to prevent the textile from fading or becoming brittle. Dust the woodwork with a soft cloth, apply beeswax sparingly, and gently brush the embroidered panel using a soft-bristled brush.
