Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century English overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. These mirrors usually feature a flat or subtly curved base with side foot supports, an arched top silhouette, and hand-applied gilding over wooden or plaster frames.

Gilt overmantel mirrors were traditionally made using a pine or lime wood base frame, coated with gesso, detailed with composition ornamentation or carved plaster, and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf.

Authentic period gilt mirrors typically display signs of natural oxidisation on the mirror plate, subtle wear or rubbing to the gilding showing red bole underneath, and hand-cut timber backing boards.

Interior designers frequently position large gilt mirrors above traditional fireplaces or minimalist modern mantels to create contrast. Placing them opposite windows maximizes natural light throughout the room.

Giltwood frames should be gently dusted using a soft, dry camel-hair brush. Avoid water, alcohol, or liquid cleaners, as moisture can dissolve original water gilding and damage delicate gesso work.
