Georgian 18th Century Mahogany Patience Card Games Table

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Georgian 18th Century Mahogany Patience Table, Or Card Games Table, Having Extremely Well Figured Two Fold Top, With Satinwood Crossbanded Decoration And Baized Interior Playing Surface, Over One Frieze Drawer And One False Drawer, With Old Brass Handles, Raised On Very Elegant Square Tapered Legs Terminating On Tall Spade Feet.

The card game of patience was hugely popular during the 18th century and seen as a little light entertainment which was a great way of passing the time. It was indeed so popular that these specific types of small, occasional, lamp type tables with folding tops were christened specifically as “patience tables” made with the intention of being able to use them as an attractive, elegant little side type table for a large amount of the time, whilst also being able to sit down at them and play cards once the tops are folded over.

This is a great example, of very good quality, constructed from rich mahogany timbers which retain an excellent colour and are well figured, accentuated by the lovely satinwood cross banding. Raised on elegant tapered legs it has lovely old brass handles which sit wonderfully on the piece, although they appear to not be original, to both the single drawer and also the false draer, enabling the table to look the same from both front and reverse.

As with all items which we offer for sale this elegant little georgian games table has been attended to in our workshops, by our highly trained, specialist antique furniture restorers to ensure it is in good working order. It has also received a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement within the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A patience table is a compact 18th-century folding table specifically designed for playing single-player card games such as patience or solitaire.

Georgian games tables were predominantly constructed from mahogany, featuring brass hardware, fine wood veneers, and hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic 18th-century examples feature hand-sawn timber marks, original brass hinges or corner brackets, pegged joints, and natural oxidation inside the drawers.

A Georgian patience table functions as an occasional side table, lamp stand, or hall console, introducing historical wood grain and craftsmanship to modern room schemes.

Position mahogany furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax periodically to preserve the patina.
