Lovely Antique Oak Desk Chair C1910

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

We have a good looking English oak desk chair C1910, very likely by Cookes of Finsbury - “Cooke’s of Finsbury was a London-based manufacturer established in 1885, renowned for high-quality Edwardian and Art Deco office furniture, particularly in English oak and walnut.”

Sitting in a highly desirable original condition we have a good looking oak frame with pleasing on the eye shaped arms, double stretcher, deep back rail and slatted back. Our workshop has carefully lifted the original grain Rexine seat, replaced the tired webbing with new webbing and carefully refitted the Rexine with the original brass aged studs. If you wish for a new leather seat our upholsterer would be happy to oblige at a cost of £80 plus VAT plus leather - we do have some colours in stock.

The seat sits well after a light beeswax and is ready for placing.

A lovely original English oak desk chair C1910.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the early 20th century, Edwardian desk chairs combined traditional craftsmanship with streamlined, functional forms. Constructed primarily from solid oak, these armchairs feature contoured backs, curved armrests, and sturdy bases designed for commercial or home office utility.

These chairs were constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, joined using mortise and tenon techniques. Seats were frequently upholstered in real leather secured with brass studding, or shaped directly from solid timber.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-finished timber joinery, natural grain variation, and genuine signs of historical wear along the armrests and stretchers. Original upholstery often retains hand-tacked studwork and natural patination across the wood and leather.

An Edwardian desk chair provides structural contrast when paired with a minimalist modern desk or industrial writing table. Incorporating neutral backdrops, brass desk lighting, and textured floor coverings creates a balanced combination of historical character and contemporary utility.

Clean timber surfaces periodically using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a neutral beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood moisture. Leather seats should be treated with a dedicated leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking over time.
