Edwardian Oak Swivel and Tilt Desk Chair

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful oak desk chair dating from the early 20th Century. It is a good comfortable chair and very well made. It has a lovely shape with a high shaped back and curving arms. The seat is upholstered in red leather with a studded edge. It has four splayed legs and the chair swivels on a large bolt and also tilts backwards when you lean back in the chair.

It is in very good condition for its age. It has developed a lovely patina and is structurally very sound. It is not without a few small marks here and there but nothing untoward for a chair of this age. The seat is in good condition and the mechanism for tilting and swivelling is in good working order.

It is approximately 38 1/2" (98cm) high and the arms are 23" (58cm) wide. It is approximately 19" (48cm) deep and the seat is 18 1/2" (47cm) high.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the early 20th century, these chairs combine traditional woodcraft with industrial spring-and-screw mechanisms to allow fluid rotation and recline.

Construction typically relied on solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, paired with cast iron ironmongery, horsehair padding, and leather upholstery secured with metal studding.

Authentic pieces feature cast iron tension springs, threaded steel central spindles, hand-turned backrest spindles, and operational wear around the armrests and leg tips.

Integrate the chair alongside a contemporary minimalist desk or a reclaimed wooden worktable to add rich texture and historical depth to a home office.

Apply beeswax polish periodically to preserve the solid timber, clean and nourish the leather upholstery with specialised balm, and lubricate the iron mechanical joints.
