Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, writing tables became central fixtures in private libraries and morning rooms. Walnut was favoured for its rich grain patterns and durability, often fitted with gilt-tooled leather insets to facilitate comfortable pen-and-ink writing.

Nineteenth-century writing desks were constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, frequently incorporating hand-cut dovetail drawer joints. Tops were lined with skiver or hide leather, accented with blind or gold leaf tooling, and supported by turned or carved legs on castors.

Authentic nineteenth-century walnut desks show signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as irregular dovetail joints inside drawers and original brass castors. The timber will show natural oxidisation and patination, while original leather insets may exhibit craquelure and light surface wear.

A traditional writing desk functions well as a focal point in a contemporary home office or modern living room alcove. Pairing the timber structure with modern task lighting and clean-lined seating creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and contemporary aesthetic.

To preserve the walnut frame, apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain and keep the item away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Clean the leather inset gently with a damp microfibre cloth and apply a specialist leather balm periodically to prevent drying or cracking.
