Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French giltwood armchairs, often designed in the Neoclassical or Louis XVI Revival style, feature carved wooden frames covered in gold leaf. They typically display geometric symmetry, straight fluted legs, acanthus foliage motifs, and needlepoint or tapestry upholstery.

Frames were carved from hardwoods such as beech or walnut, covered with layers of gesso, and gilded using water-gilding or oil-gilding techniques with thin gold leaf. Traditional upholstery utilized horsehair, burlap, steel springs, and hand-woven wool or silk tapestry fabric.

Authentic period gilding displays subtle wear, revealing red or grey bole clay undercoats where gold leaf has rubbed thin over time. Original or period-appropriate upholstery often shows natural age-related oxidisation, hand-stitched lining, and traditional webbing methods underneath the frame.

Giltwood armchairs function as strong focal points in contemporary settings when paired alongside neutral plaster walls, modern art, and minimalist wool rugs. Placing a pair opposite a modern sofa balances ornate classicism with contemporary clean lines.

Giltwood frames should be cleaned strictly with a soft dry feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that dissolve gesso. Tapestry upholstery requires gentle vacuuming with a low-suction brush attachment and protection from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
