Description

Size: 2ft 9in x 1ft 2in (85 x 35cm). Face size excluding tassels.

Antique Tekke Turkmen nine gul torba / mafrash of small size.

Circa 1880 or earlier.

This small Tekke Turkmen torba / mafrash is a small bag used for keeping personal belongings in, it was usually hung up inside the tribal yurt. This example is of 9 gul gul design, note the elem panel at the base decorated with small Turkmen trees. The torba is of very fine knotting.

The torba is in good condition with slight even wear and good pile, it is complete with the original plain weave back that shows signs of discolouration from tribal use and hanging inside the yurt. There are slight losses to the top corners with some crude stitching to hold the back in place.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A torba is a rectangular woven storage bag traditionally crafted by nomadic Turkmen tribes, such as the Tekke, used to store personal belongings inside yurts or during transportation.

They are hand-knotted using wool yarns on a wool foundation, dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments, featuring repeating tribal guls and a flat-woven plain back.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural dye variations, fine hand-spun wool, high knot density, tribe-specific geometric motifs, and complete original structures including plain-woven backs.

These woven textiles are commonly mounted on a display rod as decorative wall art, layered over furniture surfaces, or custom framed to add texture and historical character to a room.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight and humidity, vacuum softly on low suction without a rotating brush, and consult a specialist textile restorer for deep cleaning.
