Antique Tekke Turkmen chuval face of scarce format with 'aina chuval' guls to the face and 'diamond Aina' guls to the elem panel.

Circa 1880 or earlier.

An excellent Tekke Turkmen chuval face of very fine weave and scarce design. The main field is filled with 36 aina guls of the chuval gul format; the elem has 18 guls of the diamond design. The main border is also found on Yomut Turkmen weavings.

Good condition with even wear and medium / low pile.

A Chuval face is the decorative front panel of a large bag traditionally woven by Tekke Turkmen nomadic tribes in Central Asia. These woven pieces were crafted for utility inside yurts to hold household goods, decorated with geometric tribal emblems known as guls.

Turkmen chuvals are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool knotted onto a wool warp and weft foundation. Dyes derived from natural plant sources, such as madder root and indigo, were traditionally used to achieve dark red, navy, and ivory shades.
