Size: 3ft 7in x 12in (109 x 30cm) face size.

Antique Tekke Turkmen torba of very fine weave, with four Salor type guls..

Circa 1880.

A very good Tekke torba with excellent colour and good wool. The torba has survived very well with all the original long tassels still intact. These torba were used to decorate the side of a camel during a Turkmen wedding procession, these were prized possessions and formed part of the wedding dowry. The were kept as heirlooms and displayed inside the yurt. This example is of exceptionally fine weave and has survived in near perfect condition. There are old brass hanging rings attached to the back.

The torba is in excellent condition with very slight wear and excellent pile.

A torba is a small, shallow rectangular woven container or trapping traditionally produced by nomadic Turkmen tribes, such as the Tekke, to store domestic items inside yurt tents and during migrations.

These textiles were hand-knotted using locally spun wool on a wool warp and weft, coloured with natural vegetable and mineral dyes such as madder root for deep reds and indigo for blues.

Authentic 19th-century Tekke pieces exhibit exceptionally high knot density, supple hand-spun wool, natural dye variation (abrash), and specific geometric tribal motifs known as guls arranged in precise symmetry.

A torba can be mounted on a neutral wall surface as framed textile art, draped over a wooden bench, or displayed on a mantlepiece to add tactile texture and rich colour to a contemporary space.
