Georgian wine glass. The round funnel bowl engraved with a border of cross hatched vesica above a double series opaque twist stem and plain conical foot. English c1765.

Rim dia: 4.8 cm.

Foot dia: 7 cm.

Weight: 143 grams.

Condition: Very good.

Note: A very nice glass. Good colour and weight.

Provenance: The Christopher Farlow Collection.

Georgian opaque twist glassware refers to lead crystal drinking vessels produced in Britain predominantly between 1750 and 1780. These glasses feature stems encased with internal spiral white enamel threads, created using specialized cane-drawing techniques.

These glasses were hand-blown using lead crystal, also known as flint glass, which incorporated lead oxide to increase clarity, weight, and light refraction. The opaque stem patterns were formed using white enamel rods embedded into the molten glass before drawing and twisting.

Authentic pieces display a distinct greyish or dark tint inherent to 18th-century lead glass formulas, along with natural wear scratches on the base rim. They often feature a snap pontil mark or smoothed pontil scar on the underside of the foot and exhibit minor air bubbles or irregularities.

Individual pieces or small groupings are frequently placed inside glass-fronted cabinets or illuminated shelving units to highlight the translucency and internal stem detail. They are also displayed on dining credenzas or sideboard trays as standalone historical decorative accents.
