An Unusual Diminutive Vernacular Stool with Sculpted Rounded Seat C.1800

19th century
Description

An unusual small stool of excellent colour, the thick seat formed in a fully rounded, almost pill-like form, its surface deliberately shaped rather than simply finished. This sculptural treatment is rarely encountered, departing entirely from the more typical flat or boarded examples.

Raised on four splayed legs, simply constructed and driven directly into the seat, the emphasis lies in the naïve yet assured shaping of the top — a form softened and polished through long use, with a rich, untouched surface showing honest wear and handling.

The diminutive scale and distinctive form suggest a specific, task-led use rather than a standardised type.

A quietly sculptural object with strong presence despite its diminutive size.

Wonderful colour and surface throughout.

Height: 17 cm Width: 25 cm

British, circa 1800.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Vernacular stools were utilitarian items crafted by local village carpenters or farm workers using native hardwoods. Rather than following high-fashion city designs, they prioritised function, simple joinery, and durable construction.

Primitive stools usually featured thick carved timber seats fitted with turned or shaved splayed legs driven directly into bored mortises, often secured with wooden pegs.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved tool marks, irregular wear around the base of the legs, natural shrinking or warping of the wood grain, and original peg joinery.

Small primitive stools function well as elevated decorative risers on sideboards, mantelpieces, or bookshelves to display ceramics, folded textiles, or sculptural objects.

Apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the surface, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners and keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent splitting.
