Antique Sheffield Cutlers Stool

19th century
Description

A 19th century three legged Sheffield cutlers stool, with the typical ring turned legs and a slab seat made from elm. These charming vernacular stools were made by the individual craftsman for use while he was working. As well as being surprisingly comfortable and sturdy seats, they also work very well as little side tables where you might want to move it about frequently, alongside the bath maybe.

Condition: There is an old stable split in the top, and one of the legs has had some filler applied where it comes through the top - I think the peg joint has probably been damaged and repaired. Otherwise very good condition and very solid with a lovely colour and patina.

Dimensions:

Width - 49cm

Depth - 34cm

Height - 55.5cm

The seat measures 39.5cm wide by 22cm deep.

Free UK delivery - the item will be sent using a tracked and signed for service. If you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere please get in touch.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cutlers stool is a functional seating piece historically crafted for trade workers in Sheffields cutlery and metalworking workshops during the nineteenth century. Characterised by a heavy timber seat and three splayed legs, it provided stable seating on uneven workshop floors.

These stools were primarily made from dense native British hardwoods such as oak, elm, or beech, chosen for their strength and ability to withstand continuous daily industrial use.

Authentic examples feature wedged tenons exposed through the top of the seat, hand-hewn tool marks, and natural patination resulting from decades of handling and working environment wear.

A tripod stool works effectively when positioned near a fireplace hearth, placed in an empty corner to support a potted plant, or utilized as a compact side table beside an armchair.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish annually, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
