Antique Victorian Rosewood Sewing / Reading Table C.1850

19th century
Description

An early Victorian rosewood sewing and reading table, the hinged top enclosing a fully fitted interior with compartmentalised storage and a central covered well. When opened the top forms a useful reading slope, the original adjustable brass stay allowing the top to be angled as required and the removable book rest (neatly housed inside when not in use) can be fitted into position.

Below, a trumpet-shaped body with fret carved panels to all sides and decoratively shaped supports sits atop a turned pedestal raised on well-carved cabriole legs terminating in brass castors.

An attractive and practical piece, the adjustable reading slope giving it an extra layer of usefulness and appeal beyond standard sewing tables.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear consistent with age and use. Interior later paper-lined. Structurally sound, well presented and complete with its original fittings, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1850.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, multifunctional tables were produced for domestic needlework and reading. These pieces typically combined a hinged top or easel stand with a deep storage bin or drawer to hold crafting materials.

Cabinetmakers frequently utilized dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut. Internal mechanisms featured brass hinges and adjusters, while decorative panels often incorporated fretwork carving or fabric linings.

Authentic period pieces display characteristic grain patterns of dalbergia timber, hand-cut dovetail joints on internal compartments, natural oxidation on brass components, and hand-turned column bases.

A compact work table functions effectively as an accent piece in a reading corner, alongside an armchair, or as a standalone decorative surface in an entryway.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax periodically. Position the timber away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent splitting or veneer lifting.
