Volkstedt Figure of a Young Gallant, Triebner Ens & Eckert C. 1880

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A finely modelled German hard-paste porcelain figure of a young gallant, produced in the Rudolstadt-Volkstedt region circa 1880. The composition reflects the Rococo Revival taste, with an elegant pose, a rose held to the chest, and a well-developed rocaille base supported by a naturalistic stump.

The face is delicately painted, with refined expression and softly modelled features typical of quality Volkstedt production. The decoration is balanced and restrained, with careful use of colour and gilding enhancing the modelling rather than dominating it.

The underside bears an underglaze blue twelve-rayed rosette mark associated with Triebner, Ens & Eckert. This firm is recognised within the Volkstedt tradition for producing technically competent and commercially successful porcelain figures for export markets.

Larger than many comparable examples, the figure offers strong visual presence while retaining a light and well-balanced composition.

A good representative example with clear decorative and collector appeal.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Volkstedt porcelain originated in Thuringia, Germany, in the mid-eighteenth century as one of the regions earliest porcelain manufactories. Production expanded during the nineteenth century, gaining fame for detailed pastoral and romantic figures decorated with elaborate enamels and gilding.

These figures were crafted using hard-paste porcelain composed of kaolin, feldspar, and quartz. After initial firing, artisans applied hand-painted enamel glazes and gold leaf details before subjecting the piece to a final low-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically display blue underglaze factory marks, such as the pitchfork or lettered insignia, on the underside of the base. Look for fine hand-painted details, delicate facial features, and molded rococo scroll bases characteristic of Thuringian manufacture.

Display porcelain figures inside a glass cabinet, upon a mantelpiece, or alongside books on an accent shelf to integrate historical detail into a modern scheme. Grouping similar ceramics creates a cohesive vignette without cluttering the surrounding space.

Dust the figurine regularly using a soft, dry makeup brush to clean hard-to-reach crevices. Avoid liquid immersion or harsh chemical detergents, as moisture can penetrate hairline fractures and damage unfired overglaze enamels or gilding.
