Description

A finely modelled porcelain figure of a theatrical actor with mask, produced in Paris by Edmé Samson, circa 1860-1880, after Chelsea models.

The figure stands before a tree support with dense bocage on a rococo base, decorated in bright enamels with gilt accents. The composition reflects the decorative interpretation of 18th-century English porcelain typical of Samson.

Samson exhibited internationally and gained recognition at major exhibitions. Examples of the firm’s work entered museum collections, including the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert Museum). Encyclopaedia Britannica notes that Samson actively produced hard-paste copies after Chelsea.
