Description

An exceptional Regency period mahogany sideboard of elegant and imposing proportions, raised upon six finely turned and reeded legs, demonstrating superb craftsmanship of the early 19th century.

The façade is arranged with four oak-lined drawers, each finely constructed and enriched with applied moulded detailing. The drawers retain their original and highly decorative brass lion’s mask ring pull handles, lending a strong neoclassical presence and authenticity to the piece.

The sideboard is executed in the finest flame mahogany, the timbers displaying a beautifully figured grain with remarkable depth and warmth, further enhancing its visual impact. Regency sideboards, produced primarily between 1800 and 1830 in Great Britain, are defined by Neoclassical influences, symmetrical proportions, curved or bowfront outlines, finely figured mahogany veneers, and brass hardware such as lion-mask ring pulls.

Primary woods include solid mahogany and figured flame mahogany veneers, often accented with boxwood or ebony inlay. Secondary internal timbers typically consist of pine or oak, complemented by solid cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary drawer linings, irregular hand-planed underside surfaces, original lock mechanisms, and signs of natural timber shrinkage along panel joins.

A Regency sideboard is often positioned in a formal dining room or wide hallway, balanced with contemporary abstract artwork overhead, minimalist ceramics, or contemporary lighting to contrast the dark mahogany tones.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Avoid placement near direct heat sources, radiators, or direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and veneer splitting.
