Antique 1920s Nirvana International Pocket Watch

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique 1920s Nirvana International pocket watch.

The watch has a Swiss 15-jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed Nirvana International, a name registered by C. Robert & Cie of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has some surface marking.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is gold plated and was made by the Illinois Watch Case Company. The case is in good condition, just light surface marking and a gentle indentation to the back.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The dial is in lovely condition too, with original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

The watch comes in a vintage presentation box from a Birmingham jeweller. It is a bit tatty on the outside but still good to have.

Declaration

The Vintage Wrist Watch Company has dated this 1920s Open Face Pocket Watch to the 1920s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Open-face pocket watches from the 1920s feature a glass crystal directly exposing the dial without a protective front cover. They typically showcase clean Arabic numerals, slim cases, and a subsidiary seconds sub-dial located at the six oclock position, reflecting early Art Deco influences.

Cases were commonly manufactured from solid gold, gold plate, rolled gold, or polished brass, housing mechanical movements with synthetic ruby or sapphire pivot bearings. Dials were predominantly constructed from fired enamel or metal with painted numerals.

Authenticity is verified by examining internal hallmarks, maker marks, and movement serial numbers stamped inside the case back. Authentic period timepieces display age-appropriate mechanical wear, precise hand-painted or printed dial lettering, and original movement components.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed under a glass dome cloche, mounted on a dedicated brass watch stand, or styled within a decorative wooden tray on a desk or library shelf.

Mechanical pocket watches require careful manual winding without over-tightening the mainspring and should be kept away from moisture, extreme temperatures, and magnetic fields. Regular servicing by a specialised horologist every three to five years ensures proper lubrication and gear function.
