19th century
Description

A fine Louis XVI period ormolu mounted console table, dating to circa 1810, of elegant proportions and refined neoclassical design.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI furniture, originating in late 18th-century France, is defined by Neoclassical restraint, geometric symmetry, straight tapered legs, and decorative elements inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity.

Console tables from this period were typically framed in dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, topped with natural marble slabs, and ornamented with cast, chased ormolu or brass mountings.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, irregular hand-planed timber surfaces on the reverse, natural oxidisation on cast metal mounts, and aged wear on original marble edges.

A Neoclassical console table provides structural contrast when placed against plain minimalist walls, paired with contemporary artwork above, or positioned in entryways with neutral decorative accents.

Marble surfaces should be wiped with pH-neutral soap solutions to avoid etching, while timber surfaces require periodic application of clear beeswax, keeping gilding free from abrasive metal polishes.
