Artist John Sanderson Wells was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire in 1872 and was the son of John Septimus and his wife Ellen. The family lived at No. 53 Parson’s Street. John Septimus became a successful piano and musical instrument dealer which allowed his son to have a good education at Bloxham School, following on to the Slade School of Art, London and later Academie Julian in Paris.

John Sanderson Wells exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1895 with a work entitled ‘Gone Away’ and in 1896 he exhibited a portrait of a Miss Winifred Skyes who he later married. John continued to live in Banbury until c1899 when he relocated to London.

On November 10th 1900 John married Miss Winifred Sykes and the couple took residence at No. 20 Queen Annes Grove, Chiswick.

Johns early works included sporting subjects and portraits. He later focused on hunting and sporting subjects to include horses for which he is best known. His works can be found in both oil and watercolour, he exhibited his watercolours at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours c1900. He was elected member in 1903.

John also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Society of artists, Birmingham and the Fine Art Society. During the early 20th Century, John produced a series of illustrations for the Sphere Magazine, along with several others. He relocated to 8 Bedford Parrk Mansions in Chiswick around 1907 and this was where he spent the rest of his life.

Paintings were typically signed J Sanderson Wells and remained unchanged, despite his name being hyphenated to Sanderson-Wells around the 1920s.

John continued to paint and exhibit into the late 1940’s, and in 1948 he submitted four hunting studies into the art competition being held at the Great Britain Summer Olympics.

Wells died on March 16th 1955. Examples of his work can be found at the Banbury Town Hall, Oxfordshire County Museum, Sheffield Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum and The Whitaker and Williamson Art Gallery.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British equestrian genre paintings became prominent in the 18th and 19th centuries, capturing rural pursuits, sporting life, and historical narratives involving horses and riders within pastoral landscapes.

Traditional oil paintings from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods were executed using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, as well as wood panels or artist boards.

Authentic period paintings feature natural surface craquelure, age-appropriate oxidisation on the canvas back, an authentic artist signature, and evidence of historical framing methods.

To style a classical narrative painting, position it above a timber sideboard, within a traditional library setting, or as a focal piece among a curated gallery wall in a period property.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, artificial heat sources, and high humidity, dusting the surface gently with a soft dry brush and avoiding chemical cleaners.
