Antique Georgian Mahogany Triple Pillar Dining Table 12–14 Seater Extending with Two Leaves

19th century
Description

A fine quality Georgian mahogany triple pillar dining table of generous proportions designed to seat twelve to fourteen people comfortably when fully extended. A classic and highly desirable form offering both scale and flexibility.

The table stands on three elegant turned pedestal columns each raised on swept reeded legs terminating in original brass capped castors. The proportions are excellent with a well balanced stance giving both strength and visual elegance.

The top is formed from solid mahogany with a rich warm colour and attractive figuring throughout. It extends by means of two additional leaves allowing the table to be used in multiple configurations depending on space and requirement. When closed the table divides into two separate sections which can be used as a pair of console tables, a highly practical feature for modern living.

Triple pillar tables such as this were designed for large formal dining rooms allowing hosts to accommodate significant gatherings while maintaining a refined appearance. Today they remain one of the most practical and sought after dining table forms.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian triple pillar dining table consists of three separate pedestal bases supporting a modular top, allowing the length to be adjusted using removable leaves. Popularised in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, this design provided flexible seating arrangements while eliminating leg obstructions for diners.

These tables were typically crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its stability and rich grain. The legs often feature reeded moulding, terminating in solid brass toe caps and castors to facilitate movement.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery, hand-turned pedestal columns, and original brass clip fixings underneath the leaves. Examination of the underside usually reveals uneven saw marks and dark, undisturbed patination consistent with age.

To balance the visual weight of a large mahogany table, interior designers often pair it with contemporary upholstered dining chairs or minimalist lighting fixtures. The warm wood tones provide contrast against neutral architectural backdrop choices.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Spills should be wiped immediately, and hot items or liquids must always be placed on protective mats to prevent heat rings.
