Antique Regency 14 Seater Extending Dining Table Figured Mahogany with 8 Reeded Legs

19th century
Description

This outstanding antique Regency extending dining table, crafted from beautifully figured solid mahogany, comfortably seats up to fourteen people and dates from 1830. Retaining all four original leaves, it effortlessly transforms from a compact dining table into an impressive full-length table whilst also separating into a superb pair of matching console tables, making it both elegant and exceptionally versatile.

The magnificent figured mahogany top displays rich flowing grain and a wonderful depth of colour across the entire surface. Raised on eight finely reeded tapering legs terminating in the original brass cup castors, the table is a classic example of Regency craftsmanship, combining refined proportions with practical functionality.

A particularly desirable feature is its ability to divide into two matching console tables, providing the perfect solution for everyday use before being reassembled for larger gatherings. The four original leaves fit beautifully, creating a seamless appearance with excellent colour consistency throughout. A rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding Regency dining table of exceptional quality that is equally suited to both period and contemporary interiors.

Condition Report: Presented in outstanding antique condition having been professionally restored and polished. The beautifully figured mahogany top has developed a rich, deep patina over almost two centuries, with only very minor marks consistent with age and careful use. It retains all four original leaves, the original brass cup castors and is strong, sturdy and ready for everyday use.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency style dining tables, prominent in early 19th-century Britain, feature classical proportions, reeded legs, brass castors, and rich woods like mahogany. They were designed to accommodate large social gatherings using flexible extension mechanisms.

High-grade dense mahogany, particularly figured or flame mahogany veneers, was favoured for tabletop construction due to its dimensional stability and depth of grain. Supporting elements were typically turned or reeded solid timber fitted with brass castors and metal clips.

Authentic Regency pieces show evidence of hand-planed woodwork on the underside, original brass or timber runner systems, and age-consistent wear around leg joints and castors. Tool marks on unexposed surfaces are typically uneven, reflecting pre-industrial craftsmanship.

Balance the visual weight of dark mahogany by pairing the table with modern upholstered chairs or contemporary pendant lighting. Positioning the table on a neutral textured rug helps soften deep timber tones within a bright, open room.

Protect French-polished or waxed surfaces from heat and moisture by using protective mats and trivets. Dust regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the lustre.
