Antique Georgian Three Pillar Mahogany Extending Dining Table 16 Seater

19th century
Description

A superb quality Georgian three pillar extending dining table in the finest mahogany of excellent scale and proportion. The top displays a rich warm tone with beautifully figured grain and a pleasing depth of colour throughout.

Raised on three turned pedestal columns each standing on elegant swept tripod bases, the table is fitted with original and highly decorative castors, adding both practicality and a distinctive touch rarely seen on standard examples. The columns are well proportioned with classic Georgian turning, giving the table strength and presence without heaviness.

The castors themselves are a particularly attractive feature and notably original to the table. They are finely cast in brass with decorative housings, often referred to as “socket” or “shod” castors, designed both to protect the feet and to allow the table to be moved easily across polished floors. Their quality and design are consistent with high end Georgian craftsmanship and reinforce the overall standard of the piece.

The table extends to a very impressive length with the addition of its leaves, comfortably seating up to sixteen people. In the Georgian period tables of this type were designed for formal dining and entertaining on a grand scale, often used in large country houses where flexibility was essential. The ability to reduce the size when not in full use made them both practical and highly desirable.

This is a particularly versatile example offering multiple configurations from a more compact size through to a full dining table ideal for large gatherings, making it equally suited to modern living while retaining its period charm.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian three-pillar extending dining table is a formal dining table from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century that utilises three separate pedestal bases to support a modular tabletop. Additional leaves can be inserted between the pedestals to extend the seating capacity for large banquets.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, prized for its dense grain, stability, and deep warm colour. The pedestals often feature reeded or turned legs ending in brass castors and metal table fork clips to secure the sections together.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed timber, original brass castors, and period-correct hardware such as brass bearer clips or bronze drop-latch mechanisms. The underside typically shows hand-sawn timber marks, natural oxidisation of the wood, and historical structural framing techniques.

A large mahogany table creates an impressive focal point when paired with contemporary dining chairs to soften the traditional visual weight. Setting it against modern artwork, neutral wall tones, and a minimalist pendant light fixture balances classic elegance with contemporary living.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber patination. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, warping, or surface bleaching.
