Antique Heart Padlock Drop 9ct Gold Engraved Band Ring | B'ham 1916

1900 - 1920
Description

This quality antique band is modelled in 9ct yellow Gold, complete with an opening heart padlock drop, fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1916.

Padlocks first became popular during the Victorian period, worn by women whose significant others were leaving for an extended period. The significance was that the padlock would be locked onto the woman, and only her beloved would have the key- he would then open it upon his return.

Mainly popular on bracelets, padlock rings are much scarcer and more collectable.

Imagine the joy on your loved one's face when they receive this rare, beautifully crafted ring. It's not just a piece of jewellery, it's a symbol of your love and thoughtfulness.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Heart padlock jewellery gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras as sentimental tokens of affection, symbolizing the locking away of ones heart. These motifs were incorporated into bracelets and rings, often gifted during key life events or period separations.

These rings were primarily crafted from yellow gold, rose gold, or sterling silver, often marked in standard purity grades such as 9ct, 15ct, or 18ct gold. Bands frequently feature hand-chased or engraved scrolling patterns alongside stamped official assay marks.

Authenticity is verified by examining the hallmark sequence stamped on the interior band, which indicates the gold fineness, assay office location, date letter, and makers mark. Additional evidence includes hand engraving techniques and structural wear consistent with age.

An antique padlock ring can be worn as a standalone statement piece or stacked alongside plain gold bands for a layered look. Due to the dangling charm, it is best suited for casual wear or special occasions rather than heavy daily task wear.

Clean gently using lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft-bristled brush, taking care around moving components like charm loops. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, and store the piece separately in a fabric-lined box to prevent surface scratches.
