A Pair of George IV Mahogany Armchairs

19th century
Description

A well-proportioned pair of George IV mahogany armchairs, the frames of rich, warm tone with a pleasing, well-figured grain. Each chair features a distinctive curved top rail carved with stylised leaf motifs at the terminals, above a shaped back with a horizontal mid-rail. The open arms are elegantly scrolled, flowing into downswept supports that terminate neatly at the seat rail, demonstrating refined craftsmanship and balanced design.

The seats are generously proportioned and traditionally upholstered in a deep red fabric, finished with a simple decorative trim that complements the warmth of the mahogany. The front legs are turned and fluted, tapering neatly to the feet, while the rear legs are sabre-shaped, contributing to the overall lightness and grace typical of the period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dating from 1820 to 1830, George IV furniture represents the transition between the Regency era and early Victorian design, characterised by rich dense mahogany, classical proportions, carved foliage details, and reeded turnings.

Craftsmen constructed these pieces using solid mahogany with mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs, hand-turned front legs, and drop-in or upholstered seat frames.

Look for hand-sawn timber marks on hidden frame areas, natural wood oxidation, original leg joint construction, hand-carved leaf details, and subtle unevenness indicative of period craftsmanship.

Place them as accent seating alongside a minimalist sofa, position them in a hallway or library setting, or utilise them as carver chairs at opposite ends of a dining table to provide historical contrast.

Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain, protect timber from direct sunlight and central heating sources, and clean upholstered seats with a gentle fabric attachment.
