18th century
Description

A fine quality George III figured mahogany secretaire bookcase attributed to Gillows of Lancaster & London, comprising of upper bookcase compartment, writing desk compartment and lower cupboard storage space.

The glazed bookcase doors each have astragal moulding and are framed with satinwood crossbanding and boxwood and ebony string inlay, finished with brass astragal moulding and shield shaped inlaid bone key escutcheons. Inside the bookcase cupboard are 3 shelves, with fourteen slots allowing the shelves to be adjusted to different heights.

The cornice has boxwood and ebony triangular shaped inlay, with mahogany cushion moulding and satinwood crossbanding, and the frieze has fan and shell marquetry inlays.

Opening the drawer reveals a secretaire writing compartment which has a green baize writing surface and 10 satinwood drawers, each with decorative gilt brass knobs. There is an inkwell to one of the drawers, and 5 arched pigeon holes and a longer open compartment, ideal for storing a laptop.

The drawer face has a large shell inlay to the centre, with fan inlays to the corners and applied double reeded moulding finished with spear shape design. The drawer has satinwood crossbanding with ebony and boxwood string inlay, edged with cockbeaded moulding, and brass ring rope twist handles.

The lower section stands on bracket feet and has triple reeded moulding and consists of two doors, each with the same design as the drawer front. Inside the cupboard is a large storage space with a single height adjustable shelf.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian secretaire bookcase is an 18th or early 19th-century furniture piece that combines an upper glass-fronted bookcase with a lower chest containing a fall-front writing drawer and storage compartments.

These cabinets were primarily constructed using Cuban or West Indian mahogany, decorated with satinwood marquetry inlays, hand-blown glass panes, and cast brass fittings.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, original astragal glazing bars, hand-planed oak or pine secondary timbers, and historic locks showing natural wear.

Set the cabinet against a painted focal wall in a home library or study, pairing the warm wood tones with neutral upholstery and modern decorative objects.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a lint-free cloth and applying beeswax annually, avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
