Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Writing slopes, also known as lap desks, became prevalent during the eighteenth century as portable writing stations for correspondents and travellers. Designed to hold paper, inkwells, and pens, they unfolded to create an angled writing surface when placed on a table or lap.

Georgian writing slopes were predominantly built from solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often lined with brass corners or straps for structural reinforcement during travel. The interior writing surfaces typically featured velvet or skiver leather inserts alongside brass inkwell fittings.

Authentic Georgian examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass escutcheons, and natural timber wear consistent with eighteenth-century wood processing. Interior compartments frequently hide concealed spring-loaded drawers or removable dividers held by hand-carved runners.

A writing slope can be placed centrally on an executive desk, sideboard, or open bookcase to add historic texture. Positioned closed, it serves as a decorative wooden box, or opened to display vintage stationary and fountain pens.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent cracking or warping of the wood grain. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the direction of the grain using a soft cotton cloth to protect the original finish.
