19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A superb early Victorian silver christening mug with clear hallmarks for London 1869 and makers mark for William Evans. This charming example has elegant proportions, and sumptuous decoration. The rims are beaded, as is part of the scrolled handle. The body is bright cut with a central vacant shield encircled with a double festoon design, repeated around the body above and below the beading. Either side of the shield, a bright cut garland loops round to meet at the handle. The top of the handle has a delightful detail with an indent for the thumb between the top and lower beads. There is a light gilt finish inside and the mug comes with it’s original silk and velvet lined box, with inscription for retained Mappin & Webb. This a superb antique with a good early date, in excellent condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, silver christening mugs were traditional gift items presented to newborns to celebrate baptism, serving as symbolic keepsakes intended to represent future prosperity and good fortune.

These vessels were typically raised from sterling silver (925 purity) and ornamented using hand engraving, chasing, bright cutting, and decorative beaded or reeded borders.

Authenticity is confirmed by inspecting the official British hallmarks, which include a makers mark, town mark (such as Londons leopard head), silver standard mark, date letter, and monarch duty mark.

These items serve as elegant accent objects on bookshelves, console tables, or within display cabinets, and can also be repurposed as decorative planters or desk pen holders.

Maintain sterling silver by wiping gently with a soft microfiber cloth and applying specialized silver polish sparingly, ensuring light handling to avoid wearing down fine surface engravings.
