Antique Solid Silver Christening Mug – Rococo Scroll Handle, Baluster Form

19th century
Description

Antique Solid Silver Christening Mug – Rococo Scroll Handle, Baluster Form (Unmarked, Tests as Silver)

A beautifully proportioned antique solid silver christening mug, likely British and dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Crafted in a classic baluster form with a stepped circular foot and a boldly scrolled Rococo-style handle, this piece speaks to the refined elegance of the period.

Standing approx. 11 cm high and 7 cm across the rim, it has a pleasing weight and a warm, mellow patina. Though unmarked, it has been acid-tested and confirmed as solid silver. Age-related surface marks are present, consistent with careful use and handling over time.

These mugs were traditionally given as christening gifts and remain collectible today for their sentiment, form, and craftsmanship.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver christening mugs became established traditional gifts during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, symbolising wealth and health for a newborn child upon baptism or naming ceremonies.

These vessels were typically wrought from solid sterling silver or continental standard silver, featuring hand-hammered baluster bodies and cast metal handles.

Authentic silver items bear stamped official hallmarks indicating the purity mark, assay office symbol, date letter, and registered maker mark.

A solid silver mug can be styled as a small mantle ornament, repurposed as a desk pencil holder, or integrated into a vignette on a sideboard or bookshelf.

Polishing should be conducted periodically using a gentle, non-abrasive silver cream and soft cotton cloth to remove tarnish while preserving surface patination and preventing oxidisation.
