A good quality French figural mantel clock. Superb quality gilding to the seated lady and child. A white marble case with decorative gilt mouldings and gilded adjustable feet. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the 1/2 hours and hours on a bell marked Berger of Paris. A Japay Fils mark for 1849.

Place the clock as a central focal point on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, credenza, or console table. Balance the strong visual weight of gilded bronze by framing it with minimalist contemporary art, neutral wall colours, or simple modern ceramics.

Clean the marble casing with a damp cloth and mild neutral soap, avoiding harsh chemicals or acidic substances that erode the surface. The gilded bronze mounts should only be dusted gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding metal polishes which permanently remove the original mercury gilding.
