Large Brass Angle-poise Library Magnifying Glass, C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

A brass angle-poise library magnifying glass of good prorportions, c.1910.

The weighted domed base supports two adjustable stems and terminates in a large brass rimmed magnifying lens.

The angle-poise has various knocks and repairs from its years of use. The stem has been historically re-soldered to the base and the leather underside of the base is fraying to the extremities. The magnifier lens ball joint is seized. The adjustable stem and keys work as they should. The lens itself remains in a very good condition.

An attractive library magnifier, ready for display or use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Desk-mounted or weighted magnifying glasses with articulated joints emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to assist with detailed library reading, map studying, and technical work.

These instruments typically feature solid cast or tubular brass construction, heavy lead-weighted bases for balance, steel adjustment screws, and ground optical glass lenses.

Authentic period pieces display genuine natural patination on the brass, hand-machined screw threads, unblemished optical glass lenses, and heavy cast metal bases rather than lightweight stamped alternatives.

Position this functional instrument atop a stack of leather-bound books on an office desk, console table, or open bookshelf to add historical texture and interest.

Clean the optical glass lens with a soft microfibre cloth, while preserving the natural aged brass patina by avoiding harsh chemical or abrasive metal polishes.
